Dear New General Members,
I wish to extend a warm, friendly hand "sheikh" to you. You are a part of the Model United Nations Club and we want you to think of us as one big family. Over the course of your studies, you will find out a lot about the United Nations (in fact, you already know a lot more than the general citizen of most countries because you've completed the New Member Assignment). Here's one interesting paragraph I thought I'd call your attention to:
“There [is] no other forum where all countries [gather] to try to stop the planet’s bleeding...The [United Nations] has helped colonized peoples in the developing world achieve their independence, causing UN membership to nearly quadruple from 51 at the founding to 192. The UN offered shelter, food, and medicine to civilians neglected or persecuted by their governments.” - Samantha Powers (memoir)
You all have already past the biggest hurdle, which was the neophyte assignment. You will still be expected to research for your committees and conferences thoroughly. Over the next few weeks, the entire Executive Board, Sponors, and I hope to prepare you all for your first Conference, SMUNC 2009. You, I'm sure, will enjoy the conference to it's fullest extent. For those of you who have not seen the conference list for this year, please do so on the left hand navigation column ("Our Conferences"). Also we encourage new members to sign up for St. Ignatius (it is an interest only sign up) and we encourage veteran members to sign up for Brown University's Conference (it is also an interest only sign up).
Thank you for your time and welcome to the SHS Model UN Family,
Danyal Sheikh
